HISTORY
Nothing excites the eye, or the heart, quite like a diamond.

For centuries, this rarest of gems has captured the human imagination. The ancient Greeks saw diamonds as tears of the Gods; the Romans as splinters of the stars.

Today, they remain the ultimate expression of love, romance and fidelity. Each diamond is unique and different.

At Goldsmiths, we’ll show you what to look for, and how the combinations of the Four Cs – Cut, Carat, Colour and Clarity – contribute to determine the value of your diamond. Between us we’ll find the right diamond for you.

The origins of diamonds

The name diamond derives from the ancient Greek ‘adama’, which means "invincible", "untamed”. They have been treasured as gemstones since their use as religious icons in ancient India and usage in engraving tools also dates to early human history. Popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques, growth in the world economy, and innovative and successful advertising campaigns.
