DIRTY GOLD
The ‘No Dirty Gold Campaign’ raises awareness amongst customers, retailers and the general public about the impacts of gold mining. The mining industry has been asked to address its practices so that gold is not produced at the expense of communities, worker and the environment.

Goldsmiths is fully supportive of the campaign and ensures commitment and compliance from all suppliers.

Goldsmiths are full supporters of the “No Dirty Gold” Campaign and their 12 Golden Rules for mining practice, but what is the campaign all about?

The 12 Golden Rules

1. Respect for basic human rights outlined in international conventions and law
2. Free, prior and informed consent of affected communities
3. Safe working conditions
4. Respect for workers rights and labour standards (including the eight core ILO conventions)
5. Ensure that the operations are not located in areas of armed or militarised conflict.
6. Ensure that projects do not force communities off their lands
7. No dumping of mine wastes into the ocean, rivers or streams
8. Ensure that projects are not located in protected areas, fragile ecosystems or other areas of high conservation or ecological value
9. Ensure that projects do not generate sulphuric acid in perpetuity
10. Cover all costs of closing down and cleaning up mine sites
11. Fully disclose information about social and environmental effects of projects
12. Allow independent verification of the above.
